Dr. Rajesh Upadhyay is a Director & Head, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi and former Chairman & HOD, Department of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Jaipur Golden Hospital, New Delhi, for more than 15 years. He is presently the Director of Indian Confederation for Health Care Accreditation (ICHA), a non-profit organization working for patient safety and quality in healthcare services and has been the President of Association of Physicians of India (API) 2015-2016, and the International advisor for Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow, UK. A graduate of Patna Medical College, he went on to obtain higher degrees and training in the UK where he did his MRCP degree and worked in internationally renowned institutions such as Kings College Hospital, London and Royal Infirmary, Glasgow to specialize in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He received certification in liver diseases from British Post Graduate Medical Federation. His thesis on “NSAID & Gut” was accepted by the University of Glasgow. He has more than 65 academic/scientific papers to his credit including editorials and abstracts, in national / international journals. He has also written many chapters on gastroenterology/hepatology for many books. Dr. Upadhyay has undertaken the leadership role in organizing, participating and delivering more than 300 lectures at prestigious regional, national and international conferences. His academic excellence and contributions have been recognized by several awards and orations such as – Best Paper Award by Caledonian Society of Gastroenterologist, UK, and Indian Academy of Medical Specialists, India, R N Chugh Oration (API Delhi State). He is also a recipient of Excellence Awards in Gastroenterology from reputed organizations such as Delhi Medical Association, IJCP and API among others. He was bestowed with the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of Association of Physicians of India (JAPI) for reviewing Gastroenterology and Hepatology papers. He has also received IMA national award – ‘Distinguished Medical Men for their contribution of the highest order in the field of Medicine’ in 2014. He serves on the editorial board of many books and journals such as – Editor for ‘Medicine Update 2015’ book, Editor for Hepatology ‘API textbook of Medicine’, Member editorial board JAPI, Associate Editor of textbook ‘Medical Emergency’, Member editorial board ‘Medicine Update and Post Graduate Medicine’ books. As a key member of Task Force of Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Dr. Upadhyay has provided valuable advice in formulating national guidelines and position papers for IBS and NAFLD.

After this I did my superspecialization (MCh, Master of Gastroenterology Surgery of 3 years) in HPB & GI Surgery from GB Pant PGI MER, Delhi, India. MY AWARDS AND HONORS I was youngest in Indian history to do MCh in GI & HPB Surgery and the only person in Indian history to top in all four universities conducting Superspeciality MCh examinations. Subsequently, I was awarded Assistant Professorship at GB Pant Hospital. Thereafter, I received training in liver and kidney transplant program where I was one of the most prominent team members in 2 of the largest liver transplant programs of the world and in 2 of the largest living related liver transplant programs of the world. I was also one of the most prominent team members in 2 largest liver transplant programs of India. I have been one of the most prominent team members to have started and established Liver transplant programme at 3 medical institutes in India. I have extensive experience in Living related Liver Transplants with more than 850 patients. I have extensive experience in Gall Bladder Cancer and its surgeries. I have proposed a new classification, nomenclature, staging and treatment strategies for gall bladder cancer as well. WHY ME!! Currently I am Director and HOD of the Department of Liver and Multivisceral Transplant & GastroScience, where I have successfully established Liver and Kidney Transplant and Gastro Sciences department. Currently, my team takes care of the following patients 1. Liver Transplant. 2. Kidney Transplant. 3. HPB surgery. 4. GI surgery. 5. HPB oncosurgery. 6. GI oncosurgery. 7. Advanced Laproscopic Surgery. 8. Bariatric surgery. With more than 15 years of experience as a surgeon and a decade of experience as a transplant surgeon, I have attained various roles as a student, independent surgeon, team player and as Director and Head to establish and run a department, and as well as an Administrator. I have been a regular faculty at various CMEs, national and international level conferences, publications, newspaper articles, public outreach activities, public awareness camps and others. As an administrator, I have been regularly called by various hospitals for their transplant and other surgical activities and for administrative purposes. I have also established CORD (Campaign On Organ Donation) at Press Club Of India, to spread awareness and start cadaveric donation.
